Beaverhead Rock pic #1

On Hwy 41 between Dillon and Twin Bridges, MT. A very well known landmark for the local tribes long before Lewis and Clark. Does it look like an furry water creature, or a pile of organic fertilizer? You make the call.

Dillon to Sheridan, MT

Via Hwy 41 to Twin Bridges, then Hwy 287 to Sheridan. 41 miles.

Despite the fact that we were rained on twice, it was a pretty good day. The scenery continues to be magnificent as we follow Lewis and Clark's path (backwards). The mountains were topped with clouds all day, which gave them a different look. Indeed, the weather was weird the entire day. At times, such as when we decided to push on from Sheridan, the sky would clear and the sun shine like all was well with the world. Within less than 15 minutes everything would change: storm clouds would appear, the temperature would drop and it would rain (or at least threaten to rain.) Tonight when we walked to the restaurant to eat dinner (right down the middle of Hwy 287/Maine Street, there was no traffic for miles) it was warm and sunny. When we came out less than an hour later it was completely overcast and the temperature had dropped at least 25 degrees. I should be used to this type of variability, living along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. But it never fails to surprise me.

We had hoped to go further today - to at least Alder or hopefully Virginia City. But the skies were threatening-looking off and on all day and we had only gone only a few miles from Sheridan when we heard thunder rumbling in the distance ahead of us. We quickly wheeled around and went back to Sheridan to end our ride there.

The people here are great, as has been the case everywhere. We stopped at the combination grocery store/hardware store on the way into Sheridan to use the bathroom (no C-store here) and, as has happened countless times on this trip, over an hour later we finally emerged after talking with at least a half-dozen people about our trip. A lot of people wonder if we are doing this trip as a fundraiser or for a cause. While that was not the motivation for our trip, we thought about trying to promote a cause but didn't get ourselves organized enough in time to add that feature. Maybe we'll try to do that for our next trip -date and destination unknown at this time, but we agree this is not the last one.
