Ness City to La Crosse, KS

38 miles. Our shortest day so far (by distance). The alternative was to continue on to Hoisington, another 32 miles. It rained last night and off and on today on our ride. There was no place open where we could stop, get out of the drizzle and/or a cup of coffee (it is Sunday) so by the time we got to La Crosse it was an easy decision to hang it up for the day.

The landscape continues to slowly change. The fields are greener and the grasses and denser and longer. We were not surprised to learn that there are a lot of hunting areas here in central Kansas.* Deer, pheasant and other game birds have lots to eat and plenty of cover. We have also been seeing jackrabbits running in the fields along the route that look big enough to do some damage if one were to jump out in front of us. At the museum in Scott City we learned that they used to have rabbit drives in this area in the 30s and 40s (I am not making this up, I swear) because they were so numerous they were eating crops and grass intended for the cattle.

*I have never hunted but I certainly love to eat game. So while I can't shoot Bambi, I am delighted when one of our hunting friends asks if we have available freezer space.

We certainly aren't dopers. I was afraid to ask what qualified someone as a "miscreant".

We spent last night at the Derrick Inn, so it's no surprise that there are lots of oil wells in the area.
